Every now and then, something pops up that just feels right for the composting world — practical, a bit nerdy (in a good way), and genuinely helpful.
That’s why I’m really pleased to say I’m sponsoring the Compost Championships, run by Soil Ecology Lab.
What are the Compost Championships?
In simple terms: it’s a friendly competition where people submit a compost sample and get it analysed — not just for nutrients, but for the living biology too. It’s a brilliant way to learn what’s going on in your compost, compare results, and improve over time.
It’s also not just about “winning”. Everyone who enters gets useful feedback and access to a community of people who are trying to make better compost — whether you’re doing it at home, on an allotment, or at a larger site.
Why I’m supporting it
I started Compost Guy because I want composting to feel more achievable for more people. I help people compost at home and at work, and I run an online shop with composters for anybody who wants to get started.
What I like about this competition is that it’s grassroots, practical, and it brings the community together around the thing that really matters: making compost that’s genuinely good for soil.
It also gives composters something we don’t always get — clear, independent insight into what we’ve made. If you’ve ever wondered “Is my compost actually any good?” this is a proper way to find out.
What you get if you enter
From what Soil Ecology Lab have shared, each entrant gets:
- Independent lab analysis of your compost
- A private community with regular calls to learn and compare notes
- A chance to enter again later in the year and see how your compost improves
If you like the idea of learning as you go (and having something measurable to work towards), it’s a really nice format.
A small note for community composters
One part I especially love: sponsors are helping make it easier for community composting groups to take part — so more people can get their work analysed and get encouragement along the way. Community composting is often quietly brilliant, and it deserves the spotlight.
How you can support (even if you don’t enter)
If you’re not entering, you can still help:
- Share the Compost Championships with someone who composts
- Encourage a community group to take part
- Keep an eye out for sponsor posts and collaborations on Instagram and give them a boost
And if you are entering, I’ll be cheering you on. If you share your progress, feel free to tag me: @compostguy.uk.
Thanks to Soil Ecology Lab for putting it together, and thanks to everyone taking part and helping build a stronger composting community.
