Turning Your Compost

Posted on
April 13, 2020

Advice for your garden compost bin/pile.

To help make your compost bin as effective as possible you will need to ‘turn’ it regularly. This is often the part of composting at home that gets left out.

Turning your compost means mixing it up, to aerate it and mix up the waste. This leads to faster composting.

Decomposition happens because of microbes working their magic. The microbes need to be able to breathe in order to live and work. If there is no oxygen, these microbes die off and the decomposition process slows down

Turning your compost bin/pile helps the contents to not get compacted, which deprives the microbes of oxygen. Also, if the pile is too wet, the spaces that require oxygen are taken up by water. Turning the pile allows the water to drain and pockets of oxygen to exist.
